"I have been held by the Goddess and turning back is not an option. I pray this African medicine gets out to the general population where major changes will occur. Doesn't the timing seem right?"
These are the words of Gary, a former methamphetamine addict who was cured of his addiction by ingesting ibogaine, an alkaloid derived from the root of Tabernanthe iboga, a shrub that grows abundantly in West Central Africa. The root of the iboga shrub has been used for centuries by the peoples of the sub-tropical rain forests of West Central Africa as part of a once in a lifetime rite of initiation. Modern researchers, both medical and metaphysical, have discovered that a derivative of the iboga root, called ibogaine, is an effective treatment for addiction, dysfunctional behavior, and spiritual anomie. This would not be a surprise to the tribal people, who revere Iboga as a god.
Practitioners of West Africa's Bwiti religion use the iboga plant to induce visions and aid in the hunt. For three hundred years, the tribal people of the rainforest areas have been utilizing this shrub as an integral part of their religious rites. Through its ingestion, they get in touch with their ancestral hierarchy. For example, they may chew on the bark for a day or two and then go into an altered state, where they will dash into the forest and run a mile and a half, then dig under a tree and find a dowry that was put there a hundred and fifty years ago.
In the early 1900's Western scientists discovered, after watching wild boar eat this shrub and go into a frenzy, that iboga is some sort of psychoactive substance. In the 1940's and 1950's, pharmaceutical companies began experimenting on some of the alternative uses of the plant, and it was found to be a stimulant. However, in 1962, a man by the name of Howard Lotsof, who was then a heroin addict, took it to get high. After a thirty-six hour trip, he found himself to be free of his addiction, and consequently gave it to six of his friends. Five of them became free of their addictions. Lotsof realized that ibogaine was something beyond just another psychoactive experience.
Over time, the International Coalition for Addict Self-Help ran underground trial testing on ibogaine. Their anecdotal evidence shows roughly seventy-five percent success rates with addiction to heroin, cocaine, amphetamines, alcohol and nicotine.
In 1965, Lotsof formed NDA International and scheduled a use patent on ibogaine for treating drug and alcohol addiction. Scientific study began in the Netherlands in 1991 with more than three dozen addicts as test cases. Since then, the FDA has become very interested in this substance, so much that it has sanctioned the first human studies.
Presently, ibogaine, because of its psychoactive properties, is classified by the FDA as a "Class 1" narcotic (along with heroin and cocaine), and has been outlawed in the U.S. since the 1960's. Ibogaine, however, is not and never will be a recreational drug. In thirty years of U.S. drug enforcement efforts, only three grams of it has been confiscated "on the street." An ibogaine treatment, although of substantial benefit to an addict or a person trapped in dysfunctional behavioral patterns, is hard work, and not something people want to repeat. Ibogaine's true status as a non-addictive substance is demonstrated by the fact that it is legal in every country in the world except the United States and Belgium.
What is an ibogaine treatment like? This depends, to some extent, on the purpose for which the ibogaine is being ingested. The amount of the drug administered varies according to purpose, and the experience is, to some extent, shaped by the intent of the participant. A heroin addict seeking freedom from "the money on her back" will not take the same amount of Ibogaine, or have the same experience as the long time meditator whose goal is to become more connected with the Source, or the therapy patient wanting resolution to a chronic depression or anxiety. Nevertheless, all three will find that their treatment involves physical, psychological, and spiritual dimensions.
All ibogaine treatments have three stages. Stage one involves ingesting the ibogaine, which is given in capsule form. The potency is calibrated according to body weight. In the past, low-does ranges have been used for therapeutic sessions. At a low-dosage level, pictures and insights come slowly enough to be worked with by an attending therapist. A mid-range dose of ibogaine is given to a spiritual seeker wishing to have an initiatory experience. Recent experience suggests, however, that it may be unnecessary to calibrate dosage ranges differently for psychotherapeutic or spiritual purposes. If the person ingesting the ibogaine has experienced severe trauma, it is best to ingest a low-dose and have a therapist on hand, but many people can handle a mid-dose range and can access healing memories on their own.
In many cases, the insights received do not have to be experienced in the traditional Western psychotherapeutic mode. A readied initiate will experience a dissolving of emotional baggage on more abstract levels, which can be shown to be both cumulative and behaviorally altering. A high dose is used to interrupt addictions. It is necessary that the dose be high enough to overwhelm the addict's drug programmed mind and body. Even at a high dosage range, however, ibogaine does not fragment an addict's ego, which emerges from the experience intact and cleansed of cravings for the drug or drugs of choice.
The person ingesting the ibogaine may seem to journey backward in time and to re-experience significant life events. Some people undergo a "life review" similar to that described in The Tibetan Book of the Dead, and in modern accounts of near death experiences. If the person is an addict, he or she is sometimes brought to the place where the core issue that helped facilitate the addiction took began. The emotional content of that experience is relived, along with the visual, pictorial gestalt of the experience itself. In most cases, the experience is complete with 3-D effects and the sensation of actually "being there." Yet, there is also the presence of the witnessing self, who watches and finds understanding. It is this understanding that seems to allow the former addict to begin again, making new, healthy choices.
Miraculously, there are no withdrawal symptoms whatsoever from the former drug, or drugs, of choice. The withdrawal period is interrupted for several reasons. One is that after ingesting the ibogaine, the addicts simply cannot get out of bed to find the fix. Also they are too preoccupied and overwhelmed with that they are experiencing to remember that they need a fix. In addition, medical research conducted at hospitals and universities in this country suggest that ibogaine inhibits the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter thought to play a central role in addiction. Since many addicts stay addicted simply to avoid the overwhelming pain and stress and withdrawal, absence of withdrawal is a key element of ibogaine's amazing success in treating addiction.
Stage two of an ibogaine treatment seems to be a somewhat individual experience. Some people sleep for three to twelve hours. Most people, however, don't sleep at all, but experience a dreamlike, reflective period. If they sleep, they usually wake up completely alert and ravenously hungry. This is a miracle in itself for a heroin addict of ten years.
Stage three lasts another twenty-four hours. Since a person feels quite open and vulnerable at this time, this twenty four hour period seems to provide the time necessary to reacclimate oneself to "real time." People are functional, albeit slow and reflective, and much softer, but are not experiencing the full-fledged effects of the ibogaine.
After the ibogaine session, the former addict will now experience a three to six month period of freedom from craving the drug or drugs of choice. During this time, he or she needs to seek therapy and support to ground the changes and insights that have been set into motion. If this follow-up work is not done, the psychological factors that originally caused the addiction will come back. The same is true for people who take ibogaine to explore and interrupt dysfunctional behavior patterns, i.e., the effectiveness of the ibogaine treatment is "sealed" and extended by follow-up therapy. About twenty five percent of addicts who ingest ibogaine are not freed from their addiction, but most of these are successful after a second treatment.
People who take the lower, therapeutic dose of ibogaine experience its psychoactive effects at a lower, less intense pace. They maintain the control associated with normal, waking consciousness and are able to explore the insights ibogaine gives with an attending therapist. These insights can be most profound and poignant. One participant, adopted at birth, describes re-experiencing her connection to her birth mother: "I could kind of feel where I was this small infant, but I was part of this cast amount of soft skin, also. And I could feel the warmth and the smell, and everything was me! It was me... it was right... it was me. It was bigger than me, but it was me. And I could feel this woman's tenderness. And there were points where I could feel tears hitting my body. I could feel her sadness, and it was my sadness. It was a sadness I have felt throughout my life... after awhile I felt "Okay, I think I've got it now! I've got it. I see now how this all got started." This woman regards ibogaine as the greatest gift she has ever received.
There is less data available, outside of West Central Africa, on the use of ibogaine for spiritual initiation, but it is being used by Western people for this ancient purpose. The dose taken is less than that used for interrupting addiction. Some loss of waking consciousness is needed, to bypass the iron grip of ego, but not the amount needed to interrupt addiction. One initiate user, who had been doing inner, spiritual work for ten years prior to ingesting ibogaine, had this to say: "Ibogaine unravels all our set patterns- putting everything into motion- in flux. Even while it was deconstructing the world around me, the accelerating power of the Iboga was sending me outward to a level of fluidity where I could still reconfigure myself while the universe danced all around me... Ibogaine is an analog- a variation- of the Tree of Life. It has the capacity to help us achieve a new relationship with ourselves by assisting us to attain a never before achieved relationship between God and Self..."
Does ibogaine have side effects? For ninety five percent of the population, the answer is no. The three to five percent of the population who have had psychotic breaks or catatonia may experience hallucinations on ibogaine, and it is not recommended for use by this group.
Clearly, in a world devastated by addictions to alcohol, cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, methadone, and nicotine, with all the accompanying death, disease and crime, in a society where dysfunctional behavior is the rule rather than the exception, in a humanity hungering to reconnect with God, ibogaine has profound implications. At this writing, however, ibogaine is available to relatively few people outside of Africa. Howard Lotsof's organization, NDA, administers ibogaine sessions in the Netherlands or Panama. This writer's organization, I Begin Again, has been able to access ibogaine to a small but growing number of persons in a clinic located in the international waters of the Caribbean.
The opposing forces to widespread treatment with ibogaine are both economic and political. At the present time, taking the ibogaine treatment involves the expense of traveling to the international waters of the Caribbean Sea. Since it takes twenty-five pounds of plant material to make one and a half pounds of the shavings from which the ibogaine alkaloid is extracted, the supply is limited and expensive. Synthetic ibogaine is being manufactured, under the auspices of the NDA, but needs to be improved. The political opposition to the legalization and manufacture of ibogaine is all pervasive and deeply rooted. A drug which is a true cure for addiction threatens vested economic interests in the underground world of international drug cartels and also in the aboveground economy.
Addiction, like cancer, is a multi-billion dollar industry. In addition, giving any sort of legal status to a psychoactive drug goes against long standing cultural taboos. Nevertheless, the pressure to end the scourge of addiction is sufficiently intense that ibogaine may eventually receive FDA approval. In the meantime, ibogaine treatments are available at clinics outside the United States, albeit in limited numbers.
What is the future of ibogaine in Western society, and particularly in the United States, where the scourge of drug addiction has approached genocidal levels, particularly in the inner city?
A wise man said, "It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness." The I Begin Again Clinic, where I am presently, with the help of trained assistants conducting ibogaine sessions, is such a candle. It is my hope and my plan that over the next several years, a multitude of such candles be lit, to the point that we see visible and substantial improvements in the societal chaos and personal suffering of addiction and dysfunctional behaviors. I am actively seeking both individual and corporate funding for such clinics.
An ibogaine session at an adequately funded I Begin Again Clinic would involve staying for five to seven days (or more) in a relaxed and natural setting, and undergoing intensive therapy as well as support and grounding furnished by a variety of practitioners of physical therapy, massage, acupuncture, and herbal medicine- particularly in relation to detoxifying the body and relaxing and healing the nervous system. The staff might well include artists and poets to help the newly reborn ibogaine graduate reconnect with the ability to play creatively. In addition, there would need to be a doctor and nurse on staff to deal with any problems arising from the ravages of a long-term addiction. In this best of all possible worlds, the ibogaine administered would come from the iboga, rather than being a synthetic product. When the person leaves the clinic, he or she would be given referrals to therapists and support systems back home. Such a clinic would give each person who came there maximal opportunity to not only become free of addictions and negative patterns, but also to begin a new and better life. Each person who receives this complete treatment will cause a ripple effect that will contribute to the healing of others and of society.
It is clear that such a complete treatment is not going to be available on a mass scale within the near future. For that reason, the future of ibogaine needs to include developing a high quality synthetic, which will reach more people for a much-reduced cost. Although people would still need to travel to areas outside the United States to receive this treatment, until FDA approval is achieved, the follow-up therapy and support services could be done at clinics within their home communities.

The Pixies' 2004 reunion was the biggest thing that's happened in alternative rock since Nirvana, and filmmakers Steven Cantor and Matthew Galkin were there with their cameras, trailing the genre's progenitors across North America and Europe as they reclaimed their legacy. Besides beautifully shot concert footage featuring all or part of 15 songs, we get a view inside the Pixies' heads. All four were managing complex personal issues when they reunited.
We see frontman Frank Black (a.k.a. Black Francis) dealing with a bump in his solo career, bassist Kim Deal juggling sobriety and creating new Breeders songs, guitarist Joey Santiago grappling with parenthood and financial issues, and drummer David Lovering rescued from his post-Pixes life as a struggling magician. They make no secret that they're doing it for the money, but learn along this tour of the world's stages and their psyches that there's a magic in their knotty, raw music that has the power to sustain their audiences and--for a time, at least--themselves.
There's bonus footage of the movie's leftovers, but little of it's interesting except for the band's visit to modern psychedelicists Sigur Ros's Iceland studio. Über-producer/guitarist Daniel Lanois provides the film's beautiful, glacially paced incidental music. --Ted Drozdowski

In 1991, Jason was racing friends and driving drunk. They all thought they were just having a good time, but that changed in a split second when he caused a crash that killed his 15 year-old brother, Aaron. Jason was convicted of vehicular manslaughter for the death of his little brother, and sent to state prison on a six year sentence. He was released in 1995 after serving almost four years and has been sober ever since. In the time since his prison release, Jason has furthered his education as a Human Services major with an emphasis on Drug and Alcohol Counseling.
For several years he has worked in local high schools as a facilitator of drug and alcohol groups for at-risk youth. Jason also facilitated teen and parent outreach groups in the evenings, teaching parenting skills and communication techniques for better teen/parent relationships. This has given him the opportunity to meet three other families who have suffered similar losses because of drunk driving. These families allow Jason to tell their story along with his own, in the hopes that other families will not ever have to endure such pain. Spreading this message across America is what Jason now does full time.
He has been written about in hundreds of newspapers, appeared on local and national television including "Court TV" and "MTV". In the past six years Jason has spoken to nearly 500,000 teenagers and young adults, from "The North Carolina Gov. Safety Conference" to the "United States Military Academy at West Point" to " Mirmar Naval Air Station" in San Diego. He is currently writing a book detailing his life as an alcoholic and addict, Aaron's death, prison and the grace that saved his life.

One of the most critically acclaimed films of 1995, this wrenchingly sad but extraordinarily moving drama provides an authentic, superbly acted portrait of two people whose lives intersect just as they've reached their lowest depths of despair. Ben (Nicolas Cage, in an Oscar-winning performance) is a former movie executive who's lost his wife and family in a sea of alcoholic self-destruction. He's come to Las Vegas literally to drink himself to death, and that's when he meets Sera (Elisabeth Shue), a prostitute who falls in love with him--and he with her--despite their mutual dead-end existence.
They accept each other as they are, with no attempts by one to change the other, and this unconditional love turns Leaving Las Vegas into a somber yet quietly beautiful love story. Earning Oscar nominations for Best Director (Mike Figgis), Best Adapted Screenplay (Figgis, from John O'Brien's novel) and Best Actress (Shue), the film may strike some as relentlessly bleak and glacially paced, but attentive viewers will readily discover the richness of these tragic characters and the exceptional performances that bring them to life. (In a sad echo of his own fiction, novelist John O'Brien committed suicide while this film was in production.) The DVD features uncut, unrated footage that was not included in the film's theatrical release. --Jeff Shannon

According to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 18-percent of the drivers who died in 2009 had drugs in their systems. Of the approximate 22,000 drivers killed in car crashes last year, 63-percent were tested for drugs and approximately 4,000 turned up positive (There were also another 22,000 non-drivers killed in car crashes last year).
The represents a 5-percent increase from 2005. According to the NHTSA, the drugs recorded in the driver’s system, “…include narcotics, depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens, cannabinoids, phencyclidines (PCPs), anabolic steroids, and inhalants. The groups include both illicit drugs, as well as legally prescribed drugs and over-the-counter medicines.”
Also according to NHTSA Administrator David Strickland, “While it’s clear that science and state policies regarding drugs and driving are evolving, one fact is indisputable. If you are taking any drugs that might impair your ability to drive safely, then you need to put common sense and caution to the forefront, and give your keys to someone else. It doesn’t matter if its drugs or alcohol, if you’re impaired, don’t drive.”
The fact that the detection of drug use by car drivers has risen 1-percent per year for the past 5 years is more alarming than it sounds. And since many states don’t test for drugs in deceased drivers or test only a small group of drugs means the numbers could be higher.
Many people still view drug use and addiction as a personal issue where if the problem is serious enough, one goes into rehab. But, innocent people are also at risk when any impaired driver gets behind the wheel of a car.
In the Casey Anthony trial that is happening now, we were introduced to “Zanny the Nanny” which is what Ms. Anthony called her fictitious babysitter. Anthony also called her babysitter Zenaida and said Zanny was short for that.
But, anyone who has been around the drug and alcohol field for a while will recognize that Zanny is also a nickname for the prescription drug Xanax. There are also many street drugs that have been given common nicknames and even marijuana is sometimes called by a human name Mary Jane.
Many years ago the Rolling Stones performed a song called “Mother’s Little Helper” which is about a woman using prescription drugs to help her make it through the day.
The Casey Anthony case is a little different in that Zanny, the mother’s little helper was alleged to have been used on Anthony’s daughter instead of herself. The chemical chloroform has also been implicated as an anesthetic that may have been used in this case.
In the Casey Anthony case the drug and alcohol abuse or addiction issues have not been yet fully addressed. It will be interesting in the weeks to come how chemicals, prescription or otherwise, has played a role in this trial.
Red Ribbon Week is typically held the last week of October every year. This year Red Ribbon Week is being held October 25 – 29, 2010 and there are many schools across the country acknowledging this.
The history of Red Ribbon Week starts with DEA Special Agent Kiki Camarena who was kidnapped in Mexico in 1985. He was tortured and murdered by one of the Mexican drug cartels.
Red Ribbon Week was first practiced at Camarena’s high school in his hometown of Calexico, California. Students and others pledged to live drug free lives and to help others do so as well. Many slogans against drugs have come from Red Ribbon Week.
This year part of the emphasis is on both education of kids and parents. Slogans like “Be aware, don’t share” and “Lock your meds” are being used to call awareness of how easy it is for children and teens to get and abuse adult medications or even prescription medications that each other is using for a specific purpose, such as ADHD.
One of the sad notes is that because of budget cuts Red Ribbon Week will not be part of some communities. This hits especially home for me, as in my hometown in Illinois last year 1,400 students participated and this year none will since Red Ribbon Week has been cancelled.
The good news is that most other schools that participated last year will continue to participate this year and Red Ribbon Week will continue to spread the anti-drugs message.
Well, Sheryl Crowe may say some guy was her “favorite mistake” but when it comes to Dennis Quaid and cocaine he says it was his “biggest mistake.”
In a recent interview, Quaid told Newsweek, “My greatest mistake was being addicted to cocaine. I started after I left college and came to Los Angeles in 1974. It was very casual at first. That’s what people were doing when they were at parties. Cocaine was even in the budgets of movies, thinly disguised. It was petty cash, you know? It was supplied, basically, on movie sets because everyone was doing it. People would make deals. Instead of having a cocktail, you’d have a line.”
Quaid said that when he was doing the move The Big Easy in the 1980’s he was a regular user and his life was out of control. He said he was in a band called the Eclectics and was in Los Angeles doing a show and afterwards the band broke up and he had a revelation about the need to get into rehab and away from the blow. And he did.
In the 1990’s however his movie career failed even though he was clean. In 2002, after more than 10 years of sobriety, Quaid made the movie The Rookie in which he regained some of his previous credibility with the critics. Quaid is only one of many famous addicts to seek treatment in rehab and come out the other side. Now, if we can just give Charlie Sheen a shove in the right direction …
Just when you thought that taking a nice, long hot bath was a relaxing experience, think again. According to U. S. White House appointed Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske the buying of some bath salts is being used for people to achieve an amphetamine-like high.
Two substances found in some bath salts called MDPV and mephedrone are being called ‘designer drugs’ by police since there are no laws governing their sale or use, yet they give similar effects to illicit drugs and have been linked to deaths across the U. S.
These two substances are unlicensed and unregulated in most states though some states such as Hawaii, Louisiana and Michigan have started to crack down on their usage. Europe and Australia have already seen these bath salt substances spread like wildfire with many deaths associated with ingestion.
Because the molecular structure of these “bath salts” is slightly different that illicit and banned substances, manufacturers have been getting away with selling these designer drugs under names like bath salts, plant food, or research chemicals.
Australia and New Zealand have banned many of these designer drugs based upon chemical structure, so that any substance that is substantially similar to an illicit drug on a molecular level is banned. The U. S. has yet to catch up on this kind of crackdown.
For one of the Mexican drug cartels, smuggling two pounds of cocaine and two pounds of methamphetamines inside a vacuum cleaner into the U. S. sucked – literally sucked – this Christmas season. You see a Green Bay, Wisconsin woman received a Christmas present from her two kids which was a vacuum cleaner than had been reconditioned in Juarez, Mexico.
Inside the bag of the vacuum cleaner bag was two pounds each of methamphetamines and cocaine with a street value of around $280,000. The smuggler apparently was sneaky enough to hide the drugs in the vacuum cleaner that was packaged in Juarez, according Brown County Drug Task Force detective Lt. David Poteat.
The vacuum cleaner was then shipped to a retail store in Wisconsin where the household item was purchased. The woman who found the drugs is not under suspicion and the retail store where the drugged vacuum cleaner was purchased is cooperating with authorities.
It has also not been released as to whether the culprit vacuum was a Hoover, Dyson or Dirt Devil. No doubt the drug filled vacuum will need to be detoxed and rehabbed before it is put into a good home or at least a halfway house to suck again.
There is no proof yet that famous singer Amy Winehouse who died Saturday, July 23 in London, England did so because of drugs and/or alcohol. The toxicology reports are still 4 weeks away and the initial coroner’s autopsy was inconclusive.
Adding to the mystery is that no illicit drugs or alcohol were found by her bed where she died. She had told a bodyguard that she just wanted to go to sleep. And around six hours later a bodyguard noticed that she wasn’t breathing and called for help.
What we do know is that Amy Winehouse was a chain smoker and liked to smoke crack cocaine as well as drink. In 2008 it was reported that Winehouse’s lung capacity was 70-percent of normal due to her smoking habits.
So, when the results come in, it may be that Amy Winehouse did not die of a drug overdose as some are speculating. It may also be that drugs, alcohol and cigarettes contributed to the demise of her overall health condition, to the point where they were contributing factors to her death.
James Taylor addressed drug offenders as “my fellow addicts” in the Pinellas courtroom in Clearwater, Florida today. The five-time Grammy winner told the large crowd of rehab graduates that they have a friend as he spoke of his own heroin addiction and subsequent 30-year abstinence.
The program was started 10 year ago and has seen 3,000 people graduate rather than serve jail time. Taylor praised the drug court and Circuit Court Judge Dee Anna Farnell who manages the program. Taylor has had such hits as “You’ve Got a Friend,” “Fire and Rain” and “Something in the Way She Moves.”
One of Taylor’s methods to maintain sobriety is intense physical workouts. The first drug court graduate in the procession was one of Taylor’s backup singers Valerie Carter.
While James Taylor has come clean about his substance abuse problems with heroin it seems that legendary folk singer Bob Dylan has been outted as at one time having kicked a $25 per day heroin habit in the 1960’s. Whether you’ve gone public or not many heroin heroes help others in overcoming addiction and maintaining sobriety and you don’t have to be famous to be a heroin hero to someone.
I received in interesting email about some video of drug addicts and alcoholics telling their personal testimonies. Some of the videos and stories are quite compelling.
I recommend if you start watching the videos that you start with:
“Recovering Heroin Addict – Episode 1: John’s Story”
Heroin has often been dubbed as one of the most destructive and painful drug addictions known to man. The difficulty in kicking the habit comes in the forms of severe relapse, grueling withdrawal symptoms, and even death. Meet John, a former addict that tells his side of the story and explains the lengths he went to get his next high.
If you have some feedback after watching the addiction videos, then please post it here.
In British Columbia, Canada there was a study conducted by University of Victoria that stated that the hiking of alcohol prices along with the controlled administration of alcohol for the homeless would actually reduce addiction and binge drinking.
The wisdom of the study sounds counterintuitive so let’s spend a minute discussing the reasoning behind this proclamation. The study says that in British Columbia (BC) that the price of alcohol is relatively cheap compared to other provinces. Raising the price of alcohol would discourage some drinkers while it would encourage low-income or no-income homeless people to get drunk or high off traditional alcoholic drinks.
For instance, the price of rubbing alcohol, hairspray, mouthwash or antifreeze may be a cheaper and more deadly solution which some homeless people are currently using and if the price of traditional alcohol were to go up, then most likely so would the use of these alternative methods of intoxication.
Giving free alcohol along with “harm-reduction programs” for homeless people are actually achieving positive results in pilot studies including one in Ontario. Admittedly this may not be the optimal solution, but if it lessens the death rate as has been reported, then it is worth expanding the pilot program and checking results on a broader scale.
If you’re going through OxyContin withdrawal, you probably want to know when the pain will end!!! Not to fear. Withdrawal symptoms suck, but they do not last much more than a week. But some symptoms may persist for weeks or months after withdrawal. Read on for a better idea of the OxyContin withdrawal timeline.
Acute withdrawal symptoms from OxyContin usually begin within hours or days after you take your last dose of OxyContin. What makes these symptoms “acute” is that they are short in length, but severe in strength/intensity. And although symptoms of Oxy Contin withdrawal can frighten you, they are predictable. Doctors and nurses that supervise OxyContin withdrawal signs know what’s normal, and what’s not. As the brain adjusts to life without OxyContin, it can take from 4-10 days for the body to balance out its chemicals and for you to start feeling normal again.
In general, opioids should not be abruptly discontinued, as is practiced during rapid opiate detox, so medical supervisors will probably gradually taper your OxyContin dose in early withdrawal. Then, you generally experience withdrawal symptoms once previous levels of OxyContin are no longer maintained in the body. As no single treatment is effective for everyone dependent on OxyContin, diverse treatment options are needed during detox, including psychosocial approaches and pharmacological treatment. And the order in which symptoms appear will also vary by individual. However, the main symptoms OxyContin withdrawal are:
anxietydiarrheahot and cold flushesinsomniamuscle crampsnauseaperspirationvomitingwatery discharge from the eyes and noseIn addition to the short but intense physical symptoms of withdrawal, some symptoms persist weeks and months after initial detox. These symptoms are called protracted OxyContin withdrawal symptoms or Postacute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS). They include the original acute symptoms as well as non-specific signs and symptoms that persist, evolve, or appear well past the expected time frame for acute withdrawal.
anxietycravingsdepressiondifficulty concentratingdifficulty focusing on tasksdifficulty making decisionsdrug cravingsfatiguegeneralized dissatisfaction with lifeimpaired executive controlinability to feel pleasureirritabilitylack of or reduced interest in sexshort-term memory problemssleeping problemsunexplained physical complaintsChronic use of OxyContin causes molecular, cellular, and changes to the brain’s nerves that affect emotions and behavior. After prolonged drug use, the body makes adaptive changes in the central nervous system to accommodate continual use. In fact, people who take OxyContin regularly for a long time have nerve receptors that adapt and begin to resist the drug, causing the need for higher doses to achieve the same effect (tolerance). As the body seeks homeostasis after OxyContin is no longer present, affective changes can persist. This is because repeated use of OxyContin causes the brain to respond more readily to its effects but less readily to naturally rewarding activities such as listening to music. So when you stop taking OxyContin, you also have triggered the inability to experience pleasure.
One of the major reasons for relapse is the inability to feel pleasure or the desire to stop other unwanted OxyContin withdrawal symptoms. In order to resist the impulse to return to the drug, it’s important that you get support. You don’t need to recover from OxyContin dependence alone. Talk to someone. Join a support group. Learn new skills for coping. And at the least – if you do return to OxyContin, you’ll need to do the whole detox over again…so why give in just to go through withdrawal?

Tramadol provides pain relief. But when do the effects kick in? We review the basic pharmacology here.
Tramadol is used for both acute and chronic pain conditions and the opioid provides moderate to severe pain relief (analgesia). Doctors prescribe Tramadol for conditions such as post surgical pain, obstetric pain, terminal cancer pain and also use Tramadol as an adjuvant therapy in anesthesia. In fact Tramadol uses are wide ranging, as doctors prefer the drug to heavier opioids that carry higher risk for addiction. This is why medical conditions ranging from treating acid reflux to nerve disorders are all treated using Tramadol.
Doctors use Tramadol for its relatively efficient pain relief and low risk of addiction. But before you take it, you should know that Tramadol causes euphoria. If you think that you might have a problem using Tramadol, please leave your questions below. We’ll be happy to answer them personally and quickly.
The time it take for you to feel the pain relief provided by Tramadol depends on a number of factors. These include:
agegeneral healthmode of administrationtype of TramadolTramadol is available in short and long-acting formulations (brand name Ultram ER). Tramadol is also prepared in fixed combination with acetaminophen or is prescribed alone.
Doctors generally prescribe Tramadol as an oral tablet, but the medicine can also be delivered via oral drops, rectal suppositories, oral tablets, local injection (dentistry) or via intravenous administration for people who are medically supervised.
In healthy adults, pain relief is felt almost immediately if Tramadol is administered locally via intra-dermal injection (through the skin). And Tramadol absorption is similarly rapid in oral liquid doses.
Tramadol levels in the blood peak 2 hours after taking a 100 mg oral dose. In clinical studies, the onset of pain relief was faster with a combination formula of tramadol hydrochloride and acetaminophen (brand name Ultracet) than Tramadol alone. Onset of analgesia (pain relief) occurred in less than one hour. However, it takes 2 days to reach steady-state concentrations of Tramadol in the blood at a dosing rate of four times per day.
As stated before Tramadol works differently for every person. Some people register no pain relief from Tramadol, even after days of taking it and especially if they are taking other opioid pain pills at the same time. Other people feel immediate local pain relief, especially when Tramadol is injected under the skin before dental surgery. And although Tramadol is designed as a low-risk pain reliever, it can be addictive.
Depression manifests itself in many forms and there is no one size fits all in dealing with it. Depression can range from the feeling (like a cartoon character) of a small dark cloud lingering over your head (mild) all the way to a feeling of desperation, like life is not worth living (very severe). If your get up and go has lessened, you are likely depressed. There is no negative social stigma attached to depression. It happens to the best of us.
One of the things I suffered with for along time, and universally hear about from those I work with, is the feeling of depression. You see, I’ve been working with alcoholics and addicts for over 15 years, and have gone through the process of depression often myself. Treated and practicing prevention, it can easily be overcome. Here are a few tips I have found helpful.
1. Check for physical causes
Depression indicates that your body chemistry has gone out of level for a myriad of reasons. The number one thing I recommend to people is to go and see a trusted health care professional. Depression is not something to play with, and can lead to death. Few like to admit they are depressed but if you think that may be the case, find the courage to get help. Most forms of depression are easily controlled and a large percentage of the population suffers from some form of depression at one time or another.
2. Know that drugs or alcohol won’t help
For those who are using alcohol or many drugs, please be aware that you are ingesting a chemical depressant into your body in a misdirected attempt to feel better. While you may think you are escaping your darkness, use of alcohol and some drugs (including marijuana) will take you to an even darker place. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out if you ingest depressants, you will likely get depressed or accelerate your chemical depression.
3. Aim for daily balanced living
Daily balanced living is the greatest defense I know to combat depression. Simple things like eating properly and often, getting proper rest, exercising daily, social interaction and a “spiritual foundation” will go along way in maintaining proper body chemistry. If you are medically diagnosed, don’t second guess your medical practitioner, follow their instructions to the letter and don’t make decisions on your own about weaning off prescribed medications. You are not a doctor, don’t decide you know best about how and when to medicate. I’m shocked by how many of my clients do this. Depression is not something to play with and YOU generally do not know best.
NOTE: For anyone reading this article who is interested in balanced daily living, contact me at khbray[at]rogers[dot]com and I’ll be pleased to send you by return a check list for balanced living with no strings attached.
Seek professional help right away. DON’T DRINK OR DRUG and get on a plan of daily balanced living. Then get the help you need to address the issues inside of you that have led to your depressed state and over use of alcohol or drugs. There is a better way to live and there is reason for optimism!
Depression is common, have the courage to take it seriously and deal with it. I am certainly glad I did!
Photo credit: Geoffroy DemarquetCurious about how hydrocodone (the main ingredient in Vicodin) stays in the body? Got mandatory or random drug testing for Vicodin for work or school coming up? We review half life, detection times and signs of hydrocodone problems here.
The half-life of a 10 mg dose of hydrocodone is about 3.8 hours (± 0.3 hours). This means that it takes almost 4 hours for the body to process this amount of hydrocodone and eliminate half of its compounds from the system.
Employers usually want to check for hydrocodone before employing you to ensure safety/drug free workers, to check after an on-site work accident, or to identify drug problems. Drug testing is not generally not looking for current impairment or drug use but for past use of pain meds like hydrocodone.
It takes only traces of hydrocodone or its metabolite to be present in the blood or urine for a hydrocodone drug test to be positive. This measure is known as a “cut-off level,” and some drug tests set a low cut off level to determine passive users and to decrease the chances of negative testing.
Drugs are eliminated from the system at different rates and thus detectable for different periods of time, often long after the drug’s effect has worn off. Hydrocodone has a certain “detection window”, which is the amount of time after ingestion during which evidence can be detected by a drug test.
Hydrocodone detection times are unknown for blood and sweat screens. However, hydrocodone can be present in the saliva 12 – 36 hours after last dose or 2 – 4 days in the urine. Hydrocodone is also present in the hair for up to 90 days after last dose.
Hydrocodone in often prescribed combination with at least one other medication and is used to relieve moderate to severe pain or to help relieve coughing. If you like the euphoric effect of hydrocodone, and take it for non medical reasons, it’s possible that you may be addicted to hydrocodone. This is because hydrocodone may be habit-forming, and you can develop both a physical and a psychological dependence on the medication. Here are some tips for taking hydrocodone and avoiding addiction:
Call your doctor if you develop a strong desire to take more medication than prescribed.Do not crush, chew, snort or inject hydrocodone.Do not take a larger dose of hydrocodone.Do not take hydrocodone for a longer period of time than prescribed .Do not take hydrocodone more often than prescribed.Take hydrocodone exactly as your doctor describes.Photo credit: nouvelles aquarellesTramadol can get you high. But this particular type of pain medicine carries relatively low risk of addiction because its euphoric effects are only mild, and sometimes imperceptible. Compared to the euphoric effects of OxyContin, for example, many less people report a feeling of well being after taking the drug.
But you can get addicted to Tramadol. We review how Tramadol works and its addictive-ness here.
In clinical trials, 7% of people reported central nervous system stimulation symptoms such as euphoria up to 7 days after starting regular doses of Tramadol. The number jumps to 14% for people taking Tramadol from 31-90 days. This is probably because Tramadol has mu-opioid agonist activity, which triggers chemical reactions in the brain to stimulate feelings of well-being.
Tramadol is a different type of pain killer – how it works
Tramadol is considered an “atypical” pain killer because it works in a slightly different way than other opioids. In addition to being a weak opioid pain killer, Tramadol acts on the central nervous system in two ways.
1. Tramadol binds to opioid receptors int he brain to help relieve pain (analgesia).
2. Tramadol affects certain neurotransmitters in the brain to decrease the perception of pain.
In this way, Tramadol has properties that provide pain relief while minimizing euphoria (a feeling of well-being), the medical term for feeling “high”. Instead, Tramadol has been shown to be effective and well tolerated for pain conditions and is unlikely to lead to either physical or psychological dependence.
Tramadol has a reputation for having less risk of addiction than other opioids. While this assumption is probably true, the evidence for Tramadol’s addiction riskiness is weak. In fact, post-marketing surveillance studies have reported an extremely small number of people developing physical tolerance to the drug or patterns of abuse. Still, the drug can trigger addiction even in people who don’t have a history of drug abuse or previous addiction.
One thing is for sure, if you’re looking to get high on Tramadol, you already exhibit one sign of addiction: using prescription drugs for non medical purposes. Get familiar with the other signs of prescription drug addiction so that you can get help.
And if you’re worried about being an addict, don’t think that people will judge you. These days, addiction is less stigmatized as we understand more and more about the brain science behind the disease. You can get help if you want it. In fact, ask your questions about Tramadol below or send us an email. We respond to each query personally and promptly.
